Vanguard Marks

"Vanguard Marks can be used to purchase Legendary weapons and armor in the Tower."

These items are mission rewards used to purchase equipment from the hunter vanguard, warlock vanguard, titan vanguard and the vanguard quartermaster.

With the Taken King and Update 2.0 Legendary Marks have now replaced Vanguard Marks.
